Youth DEveLOPMENT Program

Birth of an Artist

Birth of an Artist is a dynamic youth development program designed to nurture creative expression, self-esteem, and entrepreneurial thinking in girls ages 11–18. Delivered through a flexible structure, either a 10–12-week session or an 8-week intensive series, the program blends workshops, mentorship, and hands-on experiences led by professional artists, crafters, and hobbyists from the local community.

Participants explore a variety of artistic disciplines including photography, media production, painting, cosmetology, and more. The curriculum is designed to encourage creative risk-taking, critical thinking, and real-world application.

Each cycle culminates in a final product, presentation, or performance at a community showcase event. This capstone experience allows participants to express their work publicly, reinforcing creative confidence while gaining entrepreneurial experience.

Examples of Final Outcomes

  • Product: Magazine, photobook, art merchandise
  • Presentation: Public speaking, artist talk, community art exhibit
  • Performance: Infomercial, theatrical play, dance performance, or skit

Program Goals

The primary goal of Birth of an Artist is to cultivate a safe and empowering space where girls can

  • Discover and explore their artistic voice
  • Build confidence in their unique talents
  • Gain real-world experience in creative entrepreneurship
  • Form lasting relationships with mentors and peers
  • Take pride in publicly presenting their creative accomplishments

This long-running community event brings together local authors and young readers during school winter break for a day centered on literacy, creativity, and connection. As featured authors, A Queen’s Narrative will be showcasing Through Our Lens, our youth-created photobook that highlights the perspectives, stories, and artistry of our young photographers.

The event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with individual author tables set up throughout the museum space. Families and youth ages 5 and up are invited to engage with authors, explore creative displays, and celebrate storytelling in its many forms.

The first 40 participants who visit our table will have the opportunity to meet our youth photographers and receive a complimentary copy of Through Our Lens. This is a meaningful chance for community members to connect directly with the young artists behind the work and hear about their creative journeys.

We are deeply grateful to Olive Tree Books for curating this event and for their continued commitment to uplifting local authors and youth voices. We encourage our community to join us for this interactive and celebratory day at the museum.
